New Zealand claims an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) spanning over 4 million sq km and the country's government is planning to play a larger role in its maritime landscape in the future, Rear Admiral John Martin, Chief of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) told Jane's. "I anticipate seeing the RNZN's assets deploying further afield and new tasks and challenges coming our way, in particular when the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area comes into force [in December 2017]", said the chief, in reference to a maritime reserve that was declared in 2016.
