China launched its first domestically built aircraft carrier in a ceremony held at Dalian Shipyard, in the country's northeastern Liaoning Province, on 26 April. Known as the Type 001 A, the as-yet-unnamed vessel is a follow-on ship to the refitted Soviet-era Admiral Kuznetsov-class carrier Liaoning (ex- Varyag), which has been in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) since September 2012.
