In recent years, Latin American navies have increasingly supported the development of a local shipbuilding industry able to answer their operational requirements with either locally developed or licence-built vessels. Colombia is currently one of the leading nations in this field, having spent the past 17 years developing its own range of riverine warfare vessels, and is now moving into the construction of seagoing ships. With more than 115 military vessels already produced, Colombia's state-owned COTECMAR (Science and Technology Corporation for the Development of Naval, Maritime, and Riverine Industries) is now a mature entity that is set to grow further as it prepares to take part in the production of Colombia's next generation of surface combatant vessels.
