When the Singapore Naval Volunteer Force (SNVF), a predecessor to the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), was formed in 1966, just months after the country gained its independence from Malaysia, the service had a total ship complement of three wooden boats, of which only two were seaworthy. In the face of a clear threat from Indonesia - at that time arguably the region's most advanced navy, with-a fleet of large surface combatants and 12 Whiskey-class submarines - Singapore had to rely on extra-regional powers, including the UK Royal Navy, for much of its maritime defence needs.
