Italy's co-fundingof the development of the MBDA Aster 30 Block INT missile, together with the GaN-based dual-band (C/X-band) radar suite being developed by Leonardo for the Italian Navy's new Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura (PPA) multirole surface combatant are seen as the cornerstones for a nascent maritime BMD capability that could be potentially offered in support of both national and NATO requirements. The third PPA will be the first to be equipped with the fixed-face C-band AESA radar. The fourth ship, scheduled for delivery in April 2024, will embody the full dual-band system with both C-band and X-band arrays.
