When Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer assumed command of the Australian naval fleet in June 2014, his brief from the chief of navy was straightforward: to reinvigorate the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) ability to fight and win. "Through the 1990s and the early parts of the 2000s, the focus was very much on maritime security operations. But we had become so engrossed in that mission, both domestically and internationally, that our skills at the higher end of conflict had started to perish," Rear Adm Mayer told Jane's.
