The US Navy's (USN's) mine counter-measures (MCM) community finds itself in a state of flux. While existing front-line assets - notably the Avenger-class MCM vessels and MH-53 Sea Dragon airborne mine countermeasures (AMCM) helicopters - are fast approaching the end of their service lives, the much-vaunted transition to a new set of organic, offboard system capabilities primarily based on the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) has been plagued by difficulties and delays.
