The US Navy (USN) will continue to demonstrate freedom of navigation in the South China Sea by conducting patrols, in accordance with international law, for the foreseeable future, the USN's chief of naval operations (CNO) confirmed on 7 December. Noting that China's land reclamation efforts are "aggressive and continuing", Admiral John Richardson told the US Naval Institute's Defense Forum Washington that the navy is supporting the US government's lead in responding to China's occupation of contested islands and ongoing build work on artificial reefs in the South China Sea.
