The Critical Design Review (CDR) for Spain's long-delayed S 80 diesel-electric submarine (SSK) programme has been completed. Announcement of a new schedule for the four-boat programme is now awaited, although successful completion of the CDR paves the way for production to begin. Navantia said the Ministry of Defence (MoD) had accepted the design changes on first-in-class vessel Isaac Peral (S 81). The boats' design length has been extended from 71 m to 80 m to address weight and balance problems.
