摘要

During the Cold War, strategic focus in both US and Soviet naval operations was concentrated on North Atlantic and North Pacific waters. Despite the central focus of the Cold War on the European continent as a whole, the Mediterranean Sea was largely a peripheral strategic region. However, as Russia makes a robust return to the world stage, the Mediterranean today is at the centre of Moscow's strategy and of East-West relations. It is now a mainstream maritime domain in which the strategic implications of Russia's resurgent international presence are being played out. Simply, the Mediterranean is strategically more significant because Russia has made it so.
