摘要

NATO has launched Operation 'Sea Guardian', its new construct for meeting maritime security requirements, the alliance's Maritime Command (MARCOM) announced on 9 November. In revealing details of the operation, the alliance said that three NATO surface ships - the Italian Artigliere (Lupo)-class frigate ITS Aviere, the Bulgarian Type E-71 Wielingen-class frigate BGS Verni, and the Turkish FFG 7 Gabya-class frigate TCG Gemlik - were joined by the lead Greek Type 214diesel-electric submarine (SSK) HS Papanikolis and the Spanish S 70 Galerna (Agosta)-class boat SPS Mistral. Mention of the submarine contribution comes at a time of increasing NATO focus on underwater operations broadly, and in particular on rising levels of Russian submarine activity and capability.
