The Royal Swedish Navy's (RSwN's) most senior officer is continuing to make the case for the retrofit of an anti-air guided-weapon capability for its Visby-class corvettes, despite an absence of funding in the government's latest five-year defence bill. Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Jan Thornqvist told IHS Jane's that there was "still an operational need" to equip the Visby class with a shipborne surface-to-air missile system, adding that the navy was "trying to squeeze this into our plans for the future". His comments come as Swedish security policy is being re-focused towards safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia's increased military activity in the Baltic region.
