Confronted with the looming shadow of a so-called shipbuilding 'Valley of Death', Australia has unveiled a long-term, continuous shipbuilding plan that accelerates the replacement of the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) ANZAC-class frigates and brings forward construction of a new class of offshore patrol vessel (OPV). Announcing in Adelaide on 4 August what he described as the first commitment by any Australian government to a "permanent naval shipbuilding industry", prime minister Tony Abbott said the strategy would generate significant economic growth and sustain several thousand Australian jobs.
