The 600 mile-long shallow inland sea variously known as the Persian Gulf or the Arabian Gulf, according to perspectives taken from either its eastern or western shore, is often full of naval forces from major western and other powers. However, it is also home to naval forces operated by the eight littoral nations. Today, these nations are paying greater attention to their own need to protect their respective territorial waters and, in particular, offshore resources.
