The US Navy's (USN's) most senior requirements sponsor for surface warfare has given an indication of the top-level thinking on technologies - including high energy weapons - to be incorporated in a Future Surface Combatant planned to enter service in the 2030s. At the same time, surface warfare division director Rear Admiral Thomas Rowden stressed the imperative to make the ship affordable.
