US lawmakers are seeking to establish a fund outside of the US Navy's (USN's) shipbuilding account to support the procurement of the nuclear-powered strategic ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) replacement. In its markup of the fiscal year 2015 (FY 2015) defence authorisation bill, the House Armed Services seapower and projection forces subcommittee is introducing legislative language to set up a 'National Sea-Based Deterrence Fund' that would be administered by the US defence secretary for the advance procurement and construction of SSBNs.
