摘要

For the first time in 23 years, July 2014 will see a new ship - the Coastal Patrol Vessel (CPV) Castor (P 901) - commissioned into the Belgian Naval Component (BNC) fleet. Rear Admiral Michel Hofman, the BNC's Commander, told IHS Jane's that strategic shifts since the end of the Cold War and the recent international economic crisis saw his navy, like many others, endure repeated cuts: "The shrinking budget forced us to decrease numbers of ships, hence the loss of some 50% of our ships since 1994. Consequently we have had to cope with less platform availability and decreasing training opportunities, and have become more selective in drawing up ships' programmes. Today, work-up and operations or deployments absorb most of the platforms' sea days, thus not leaving much room to conduct at-sea training."
