For much of the post-Second World War period, shipbuilders from Western Europe and the United States enjoyed a dominant market position in the design and build of naval platforms for export. This reflected the influence of historic colonial and cultural ties, and Western leadership in terms of platform and combat systems technology. However, recent years have seen Asia-Pacific shipbuilders capturing contracts in Europe, South America, Africa, and the Middle East - regions previously the almost exclusive preserve of their Western counterparts.
