In the later part of 2010, the business and news sections of some major European broadsheet newspapers reported that China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) had purchased pier access at the major international shipping terminal in Piraeus, Greece. Yet, despite this coverage, news of the purchase by a state-owned Chinese company of deepwater access at a port in a NATO member state country did not appear to generate as many politico-strategic waves in Europe as might have been expected. Writing in the RUSI Newsbrief in January 2012, Evangelia Anastasiadou noted that COSCO's investment had begun in November 2008, with the signing of a USD4.45 billion concession agreement giving the company partial ownership of Greece's biggest port for the next 35 years. Anastasiadou added that China had moved to expand economic influence in Europe, at a time when the Eurozone crisis was paralysing a number of nations, as part of a strategy of acquiring maritime assets around the world to improve distribution networks and strengthen its global trade position.
