Slowly but surely, the United States Navy (USN) and US Marine Corps (USMC) are re-shaping their capabilities and approach to seabasing. With what is essentially a joint amphibious fleet, together they are looking to operate with a more effective sustained presence at distance and with greater strike range. Traditionally, a large part of the naval service's amphibious units acted more like a transport service, with its major function being to carry marines to the fight.
