The Interactive Defence and Attack System for Submarines, or IDAS, short-range precision missile system represents the first time a submarine has been able to engage hostile aircraft, and the system has been heralded as a potential game-changer in the underwater warfare arena. The weapon was developed by the ARGE IDAS consortium, consisting of Diehl Defence, TKMS, and previously Kongsberg. Successful firings took place from an underwater test facility at Meldorfer Bay, northern Germany, in November 2006 and from a submerged Type 212A submarine, U33, in the Baltic Sea in May 2008.
