摘要

As the US Navy (USN) works on replacing its Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), it also is extending the life of the boats' primary weapon system, the Trident Ⅱ D5 ballistic missile, and is determining how the missile replacement programme should proceed. The USN has only the DS in its submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) inventory, Rear Admiral Terry Benedict, the USN's Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) director, told HIS Jane's. "In the past we had more than one system deployed… Right now [our] entire infrastructure has been downsized to support just one programme." Designed over 20 years ago, the D5 is scheduled to be deployed for over 50 years - far longer than any previous ballistic missile, Adm Benedict said. He added that its performance has far exceeded the original design requirements.
