The birth of Australian sea power can be traced back to the formation of the Australia Squadron of the Royal Navy in 1859. Following adoption of the Constitution of Australia on 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was subsequently formed from the British colonies of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. This resulted in the activation of the Commonwealth Naval Forces in 1901, amalgamating the distinct colonial naval forces that had hitherto been operated by each of the colonies. These forces made a great contribution to Australia's defence prior to the arrival of the RAN's first purpose built fleet.
