On 25 April 1915, the Australian submarine AE2 achieved what has been called 'the finest feat in submarine history': the first submerged passage of the Dardanelles Strait. As allied troops were landing on the beaches at Gallipoli, AE2 was making her dangerous passage through enemy minefields. Every time she raised her periscope to confirm her position, she brought down a hail of Turkish fire, but by 6am she had safely reached the narrowest part of the strait. Despite grounding twice, she managed to avoid the many enemy vessels trying to find her and eventually entered the Sea of Marmora. AE2's achievement was to show that the feat was possible and she was followed by other submarines that severely disrupted Turkisn sea communications to Gallipoli.
