In the late 1990s, the French Navy's Aeronavale began a major re-equipment programme when the first of three Northrop Grumman E-2C Hawkeye aircraft arrived to deliver a much-needed airborne early warning capability. Since then, a steady stream of new aircraft has renewed the inventory. The Dassault Aviation Falcon 50 maritime surveillance aircraft entered service, followed soon afterwards by Dassault's Rafale multirole fighter. Next to come was the Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma, purchased to bridge the gap between the retirement of the Aerospatiale SA 321 Super Frelon and the arrival of the NHIndustries NH90 NATO Frigate Helicopter. Eurocopter's AS565 Panther Standard 2 multirole medium helicopter is also now in service with Flottille 36F.
