Interest among USN and USMC commanders in fast, aluminium-built intra-theatre connector vessels was born during the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) involvement in East Timor in 1999. The RAN employed shallow draught and high-speed water craft to aid the resupply of engaged ground forces. "I remember reading the message traffic," Strock said. "The navy and the marines were sitting on their amphibs watching these things zoom back and forth and that was the genesis of the Joint High Speed Vessel [JHSV] project." Reduced to 10 hulls in the proposed FY13 budget, the fast ferry-type JHSV catamarans will, nevertheless, provide an important capability for the rapid intra-theatre movement of men and materiel.
