Ten years in Afghanistan has provided the USMC forces in that country with an elaborate communications infrastructure based on a network of forward operating bases. The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory's (MCWL's) Limited Objective Experiment I testei concepts that could allow troops ashore to be commanded from a sea base more than 180 n miles away. Vince Goulding, director of the MCWL's Experiment Division, is candid about the challenges embarked marines will face with the communications equipment currently fielded by the service.
