Thirty years after Argentine landings in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) sparked a short but intense conflict that stretched the UK Royal Navy (RN) to its limits, the second of the service's new Type 45 destroyers, HMS Dauntless, is sailing from Portsmouth to begin its maiden operational deployment in the cold, grey waters of the South Atlantic. While recent media coverage has sought to link the deployment to heightened diplomatic tensions between the UK and Argentine governments, the truth is that it is a routine tasking programmed more than a year ago. However, what is worth remembering is how much the primary anti-air warfare (AAW) capability of Dauntless and its five sister ships was shaped by the events of 198 2, particularly the RN's bitter experience in the face of attack from low flying strike aircraft and anti-ship missiles.
