The recapitalisation of the US Coast Guard's (USCG's) ageing fleet is progressing "way too slow" in an era of shrinking budgets, the service's uniformed chief told the Navy League Sea-Air-Space conference on 16 April. With some of its vessels well over 40 years old, plans by the USCG to commence routine operations in the Arctic meant that other missions would have to be terminated, said its commandant, Admiral Robert Papp. The third Legend-class National Security Cutter (NSC) was commissioned recently, but "we should have been up to NSC number 6 right now", he said. However, he said he had "high confidence" that all 58 of the smaller Sentinel-class cutters would eventually be built.
