With in-service frigates now being deployed in very different environments to those envisaged when they were conceived during the Cold War, the next generation of multipurpose surface combatants - which are expected to enter service from around 2020 - will be more versatile and take changing operational scenarios in their stride. Sometimes described as a distinctly European concept, a number of programmes with potential for overseas navies are underway.
