Carlo Bergamini represents the first Italian output from the OCCAR-managed FREMM (Fregata Europea Multi-Missione/ Fregate Europeenne Multi-Missions) programme with France. Through this programme, Italy aims to recapitalise the bulk of its frigate force with the introduction of 10 FREMM ships - six General Purpose (GP) variants and four anti-submarine warfare (ASW) vessels - to replace four Artigliere-class fleet patrol ships and eight Maestrale-class frigates.
