The US Navy's creation of a fourth riverine squadron has put the spotlight on small boat operations in Iraq, while Colombia is developing large river gunboats to combat insurgents and drugs traffickers. Mrityunjoy Mazumdar surveys the global shallow draught scene Responding to requests from combatant commanders for water-borne assets capable of operating both in littoral environments and far inland, the US Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) confirmed in March 2010 that its Riverine Force would be expanded with the creation of a fourth squadron.
