History provides a rich tapestry of examples of the utility of amphibious operations, from the shores of the Crimea to the Falkland (Malvinas) Islands. However, the ability to project force into littoral zones had to be justified afresh during the course of the UK's 2010 Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). With the new Conservative/ Liberal Democrat coalition government cutting the 2011-2012 defence budget by eight per cent, the future of the Royal Navy's (RN's) amphibious capability was far from certain.
