Although surface combatant design has made spectacular advances since the end of the Second World War, it remains a fact that the ramped landing craft employed to shuttle men and materiel between amphibious units and the beach have advanced relatively little, and continue to suffer from a range of operating shortfalls. These include slow speed (which dictates a long transit or the movement of high value amphibious assets into exposed positions close to shore), limited payload, extended load/offload times, poor seakeeping and sub-optimal integration with modern amphibious dock vessels.
