Defence cuts announced by Netherlands defence minister Hans Hillen on 8 April will bite hard into the Royal Netherland Navy's (RNLN's) front line, resulting in significant reductions in maritime patrol and mine countermeasures (MCM) forces and in afloat support. These measures, which started to take effect from 9 May, will curtail the scale and scope of the Koninkli-jke Marine's operational capabilities, and hence the range of options available to Dutch defence planners in the maritime domain. And with fewer options, inevitably, comes greater risk.
