By the end of the Second World War the aircraft carrier had become firmly established as the pre-eminent naval power-projection asset. However, for much of the period since 1945, arguments have raged in political, defence and academic circles as to the cost effectiveness and military worth of fixed-wing naval air power. Despite the proven efficacy of contemporary carrier strike operations over Afghanistan and Libya, it remains a fierce and divisive debate and the aircraft carrier remains the subject of enduring controversy.
