Knowledge of the environment, and the ability to accurately predict weather and oceanographic conditions, is not only critical to the success of military operations in the maritime domain but also confers an advantage -some would argue an asymmetric one -over the adversary. Perhaps the most celebrated example occurred on the evening of 4 June 1944, when Group Captain John Martin Stagg, chief meteorological officer for Operation 'Overlord', identified a 'window' in the weather with sufficient confidence to enable General Dwight D Eisenhower to give the go-ahead for the D-Day landings in Normandy, France, on 6 Tune 1944.
