The Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) has recommended the US Navy cancel two high-profile experimental surface weapons programmes, according to a 17 June summary of an authorisation bill. Senior politicans want the navy to cease its development efforts under the electromagnetic railgun and Free Electron Laser (FEL) programmes, describing the former as "high risk" and citing "concerns over operational technical challenges" with the latter.
