The Mexican Navy launched a 3,666-tonne logistics support ship - said by the Navy Secretariat to be the largest military vessel constructed in Mexico - at the Pacific coast port of Salina Cruz on 30 August.ARM Montes Azules (BAL 01) is the first of two ships to be built at the navy's Astilleros de Marina No 20 (ASTIMAR 20) shipyard under the Buque Logistico Multiproposi-tos (Multipurpose Logistics Vessel -BULOM) programme.The vessels are intended to replace two decommissioned tank landing ships tank (LSTs) that were built in the US during the Second World War. It might also replace the surviving Panuco-class LST ARM Manzanillo {ex-Clearwater County), which has a similar pedigree. Montes Azules is 99.8 m long with a beam of 15.2 m and a design draught of 3.4 m, a helicopter flight deck amidships and two telescopic cranes. Two 1,750 bhp diesel engines driving two four bladed propellers provide a maximum speed of 12 kt; endurance is 60 days. The vessel will accommodate 89 personnel and has exclusive facilities for 18 women. Other details of the ship design have not been confirmed, but Jane's understands that it is likely to be derived from a legacy US LST.
