A sixth aircraft type has flown on bio-mass-derived jet fuel as part of the US Navy's alternative energy programme. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) announced on 16 September.A Grumman EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 made the flight from Naval Air Station Patux-ent River, Maryland, on a blend of JP-5 aviation fuel and camelina oil.The Prowler flight comes less than a month after the navy announced it had flown a BAE Systems/BoeingT-45 Goshawk jet trainer on the same bio-fuel blend as part of ongoing efforts to help meet a wider Department of Defense drive to reduce its dependency on foreign energy supplies.With this latest mission, the navy has now flown the Prowler, Goshawk, Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and F/A-18D Hornet combat aircraft, Sikorsky MH-60S Seahawk helicopter and the Bell-Boeing MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor on the biofuel blend. According to NAVAIR, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II and the Northrop Grumman MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned helicopter will also be tested before the end of the year.
