The Turkmenistan Navy has begun taking delivery of four new corvettes and patrol vessels as it seeks to transform itself from a coastguard service into a force capable of conducting limited combat operations.Russia's JSC Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard has delivered the first of two 57 m Project 12418 corvettes; both ships were built at the St Petersburg yard under a 2008 contract awarded under the auspices of a Russia-Turkmenistan military technical co-operation accord.Turkmenistan is also acquiring two 57 m NTPBs (New Type Patrol Boats) from Turkey's Dearsan Shipyard, although both countries officially deny the purchase.
