Australian shipbuilder Austal has signed an agreement to acquire a commercial yard in the Philippines as the company refocuses its domestic activities on the naval sector. Austal told shareholders in a 20 October meeting that the acquisition is expected to be finalised before the end of 2011 and will be focused on the construction of fast crew-transfer boats, work boats and small ferries. Newspaper reports have suggested that the Philippines shipyard is based in Cebu and is valued at about AUDIO million (USD10.3 million). The acquisition is driven by a requirement highlighted by Austal in July to cut costs in commercial shipbuilding while re-orientating its facilities in Australia - which are based in Henderson, Western Australia - towards the manufacturing and support of naval vessels.
