The first of the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Astute-class nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs) has fired Tomahawk land-attack missiles for the first time. HMS Astute (S 119) launched two cruise missiles from the Gulf of Mexico. The first, British Flight Test 9 (BFT-9), used a Tomahawk Block IV missile and took place on 8 November. BFT-10, using a Block MIC missile, followed on 9 November. Both missiles flew via waypoints before hitting their intended targets at the Eglin Air Force Base land test range in Florida in the southeastern United States. According to the RN, the test weapons achieved speeds of up to 885 km/h. The UK is the only country to have been supplied with Tomahawk technology by the US, with the Block INC variant entering service in selected Swiftsure- and Trafalgar-class SSNs from late 1998.
