The US Navy has prioritised the acquisition of aircraft, submarines and low-risk surface combatants at the expense of advanced capital ships in its USD160.6 billion budget request for Fiscal Year 2011 (FY11).rnIn documents published on 1 February, the navy aborted its CG(X) next-generation cruiser and EP-X electronic surveillance aircraft programmes and opted not to add to the three Zumwalt-class (DDG 1000) destroyers already on order.rnInstead the service turned its attention to the procurement of F-35 Lightning II and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet strike fighters, EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, Virginia-class submarines, Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) frigates and legacy Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
