An arm of the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the US Coast Guard (USCG) is among the most diverse of the United States' federal agencies, responsible by statute for 11 principal missions.rnThe portfolio includes port, waterway and coastal security; drug interdiction; provision of navigational aids; search-and-rescue services; fisheries protection; marine safety; defence readiness; migrant interdiction; environmental protection; ice operations; and other law-enforcement roles.rnWith just under 42,000 personnel, it is a service that has been stretched thinly in recent years, plagued by budgetary constraints and an ageing inventory.
