The South African Navy's latest Submarine Officer Command course is scheduled for the second half of 2010 and will coincide with Exercise ibsamar'. Future courses could include students from other navies.rnAmbitious submariners in the South African Navy (SAN) have to pass the rigorous Submarine Officer Command (SMOC) course before they are allowed to drive one of the SAN's three Type 209/1400 boats.rn"It takes about 10 years to develop the necessary criteria before an officer is selected as a prospective commanding officer of a submarine," says Captain Andre De Wet, who is Senior Officer Submarines, Fleet Command SAN and Head of the Submarine Training School.
