The Spanish Navy Is looking to procure a new design of frigate - known as F 110 - to replace the six Santa Maria-class (F 80) frigates from the 2020s.However, the navy is also facing stringent austerity measures that will see 17 ships taken out of service between 2009 and 2011, delegates at IQPC's Future Naval Plans conference in London were told on 27 April.Commander Carlos Martinez-Mer-ello, head of the navy's capability development branch, said that F110 Is intended to complement the Alva-ro de Bazan-class (F 100) frigates and the new Meteoro-class offshore patrol vessels.
