After a long and exhaustive test and evaluation period, and a five-year slippage in the procurement programme, Sweden's Visby corvettes are showing their potential. Guy Toremans went aboard the second-of-class during Exercise 'Brilliant Mariner'Two of the Royal Swedish Navy's (RSwN's) five Visby-class corvettes, HMS Helsingborg and HMS Haernoesand, have been modified in order to conduct missions far beyond the navy's traditional operating area in the Baltic Sea. Launched in 2003 and 2004 respectively and commissioned in 2006, the pair were refitted by Kockums under a SEK23 million (USD3.2 million) contract awarded by the Defence Materiel Administration in February 2009.
