The ending of Sri Lanka's civil war in May 2009 has seen the maritime environment transform radically with the removal of fishing curfews and restrictions throughout the country. Consequently, for the first time in nearly three decades Sri Lanka's fishing community has experienced normality, fostering rapid growth in the industry.rnHowever, the perennial problem of Indian fishermen entering Sri Lankan waters - and concerns over smuggling and subversive infiltration as well as the widespread illegal exploitation of Sri Lanka's marine resources - remains a major source of bilateral tension.
