Admiralty Shipyards in St Petersburg has commenced construction of the first of six improved Kilo-class (Project 636) submarines for an overseas customer.rnThe end-user is almost certainly Vietnam, although the country was not identified by the Russian yard in references to the keel-laying ceremony on 24 August.rnHowever, the company did say that production of the boat will take 32 months to complete, suggesting that the Vietnam People'srnNavy - if this is indeed the customer - will not take delivery before the end of 2013. Subsequent units are expected to follow at the rate of one per year. Vietnam ordered six Project 636 Kilos in a deal thought to be worth around USD2.1 billion in mid-2009, although the sum may be as high as USD3.2 billion if the cost of weapons and local support infrastructure is included.
